President – Saudi German Hospitals Group

Evolve: Based on your awe-inspiring profile, we see an incredible progression. We are observing an intriguing screening of an individual who works as an engineer by profession, is a global speaker, and above all a philanthropist. I would like you to Please our readers with this enormous journey thus far?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: The journey began in the late fifties, deeply rooted in familial values and a profound sense of purpose. Growing up in a pharmaceutical family, where my father, a pharmacist, preached compassion and selflessness, left an indelible mark on me. I clearly recall a moment when it was dawn when a man in severe pain sought my father's help. Instead of having greed for selling the medicine and earning money, my father's sole concern was alleviating the man's toothache-induced suffering. This upbringing instilled in me a deep-seated commitment to relieve human suffering.

Fast forward to the present, I find myself in Pakistan, blessed to lead an organization dedicated to this very cause. I would like to point out that our mission extends beyond humans; we are constructing hospitals for animals, recognizing that suffering knows no bounds. It's a privilege to spearhead an organization with such a noble objective.

Reflecting on my journey, I'm reminded of a key lesson I'd like to impart to our readers: strive for a higher purpose. Drawing from research on enduring companies, it's evident that those with lofty objectives endure the test of time. Whether in IT, tourism, or education, transcending mere profit to serve a greater good is paramount.

In essence, my message resonates with business leaders: prioritize a higher objective. By embracing a purpose beyond profit, we not only thrive as businesses but also make meaningful contributions to society.

Evolve: You were operating and expanded your Batterjee National Pharmacies with full scope to Saudi German Hospitals Group, one of the most prominent and recognized private healthcare organizations in the MENA region  that is committed to shaping the healthcare landscape. How far do you think this viewpoint is making its way into public healthcare?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: Our journey from Batterjee National Pharmacies to Saudi German Hospitals Group underscores our dedication to shaping the healthcare landscape, not just in the private sector but also in public healthcare. By prioritizing innovation and fresh perspectives, we're setting new standards that have the potential to influence public healthcare practices. Our approach emphasizes the importance of driving change and improving healthcare outcomes for all, transcending the boundaries of the private and public sectors.

We believe that by championing this viewpoint, we can contribute significantly to enhancing the quality and accessibility of healthcare services across the MENA region.

Evolve: We learned about your contribution in the composition of ‘Road to Success’. How far, in your opinion, is it considerate to move on with creating one’s future?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: In my view, the act of forging one's path towards the future is not just considerate, it's essential. "Road to Success," a book close to my heart, explains this journey excellently. In the Book there are six distinct steps, individuals navigate towards their objectives, propelled by a universal force akin to gravity. The  essence lies in understanding that pursuing our goals isn't a solitary endeavor. There's a cosmic force, whether perceived as Allah or other divine energies, subtly aiding our journey. It's a reminder that our aspirations aren't futile; they're supported by an unseen hand. This philosophy underscores the importance  of taking proactive steps toward our ambitions. By embracing passion, persistence, and innovation, coupled with prayer and adherence to Islam for Muslims, we align ourselves with this guiding force, ensuring our dreams become tangible realities. So, what I am trying to say is, that it's not just considerate but imperative to embark on the journey of creating one's future.

Evolve: Could you describe a particular turning point moment in your career journey that changed its trajectory and created the conditions for further expansion?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: The turning point in my career journey traces back to my high school days when I used to rank 6th and 7th in my class.  It was during our weekly quizzes that everything changed.  I was struggling with a problem and sought help from Abdullah, who was the top-performing student in our class. Disappointingly, he brushed me off. When the test came, Abdullah aced it, but I failed.

That night, I was really upset, and fueled by determination, I hit the books until dawn. Three months later, I ranked first surpassing Abdullah. This experience was a wake-up call; it taught me the value of striving for excellence, of refusing to settle for anything less than the best.

This drive for success was further fueled by my mother's influence. Coming from a pharmaceutical family, my mother's admiration for doctors was evident. She even named us siblings after renowned physicians. One of my siblings eventually became a distinguished orthopedic surgeon after dedicating 13 years to his medical education. As for me, I pursued a degree in electrical engineering, but I wanted to build my hospital as well to grow the family business. In Pakistan, this endeavor will mark the creation of my 19th and 20th hospitals. It's a testament to the enduring influence of family and the pursuit of excellence instilled in me from that pivotal moment in high school.

Evolve: Why have you chosen Mr. Zahid Rafiq of Lahore smart city in Pakistan amongst all of the others developers?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: I don’t believe it was solely my decision to choose Mr. Zahid Rafiq of Lahore Smart City in Pakistan, but rather it was Allah who guided me to him. I have always been seeking guidance from Allah to alleviate suffering and this new beginning is an indicator of how Allah has heard my prayers and is helping me achieve my mission. I am grateful to God for orchestrating this collaboration with Mr. Zahid Rafiq.

It surprises me even today that I have been connected with the Rafiq family for over 30 years, primarily through our joint efforts in building hospitals in Saudi Arabia and still unaware of their involvement in real estate development but Allah saw fit to align our paths. Their family share similar values and objectives as mine, despite operating in different industries and that is one of the reasons we get along so well.

I know that Pakistan despite its challenges, holds immense potential, especially in addressing healthcare needs. I'm deeply committed to making a difference in Muslim countries, and Pakistan's rich talent pool and untapped opportunities resonate with me. Introducing corporate investment in healthcare, an area lacking in the country is an exciting prospect. Our partnership aims not only to alleviate suffering but also

to revolutionize healthcare accessibility. It pains me to see people traveling abroad for basic medical needs due to inadequate local healthcare. Countries like Pakistan, Egypt, and Morocco hold promise for  transformative healthcare initiatives, and our hospitals there will serve as beacons of change. These hospitals won't just be facilities; they'll be symbols of achievement, like stars on a jacket, showcasing our collective efforts to uplift communities and provide quality healthcare where it's needed most.

Evolve: As we are aware, you have been deeply involved in philanthropy and building Saudi German hospitals is something you have done. How has your family helped you on this enlightening journey, and supported you on this business of inspiration?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: I began this venture with my brother, and later, I felt it was crucial to involve more family members, including my father, sisters, and other brothers, as partners. Despite not contributing financially, their unwavering support and blessings have been invaluable. Their presence has provided me with the emotional strength and encouragement needed to navigate the challenges of this business of inspiration. Their belief in our shared vision and their constant support have fueled my determination to make a positive impact through healthcare. Together, we've built more than hospitals; we've forged a bond rooted in compassion, dedication, and familial unity.

Evolve: You have received numerous accolades, including the Best Executive Director in Healthcare Award, best Arab Management Personality, Best Hospital Developer, and an Outstanding Corporate Leader in 2010. How much do these acknowledgments help you stay current with your interests these days?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: The recognition I've received through awards like Best Executive Director in Healthcare, Best Arab Management Personality, Best Hospital Developer, and Outstanding Corporate Leader in 2010 has been truly inspiring. Awards hold a unique power to motivate and uplift individuals, driving them to strive for excellence. I firmly believe that countries should actively acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of their citizens, whether in government or private organizations. Personally, receiving these accolades has provided me with an electric boost of inspiration. It not only validates my efforts but also fuels my drive to continue making meaningful contributions to healthcare and beyond. Moreover, witnessing others' achievements and the recognition they receive serves as a powerful incentive for me to work harder and aim for further recognition in the future. In essence, awards play a crucial role in keeping me motivated and aligned with my interests, constantly driving me to pursue excellence in my endeavors.

Evolve: Could you describe your leadership style, how it fits within the group's objectives, and what you envision for the future of Saudi German Hospitals under your direction?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: My leadership style is deeply influenced by the exemplary leadership of Prophet Muhammad. Despite not being literate, he was spiritually connected and exhibited remarkable humility, respect, and equality towards all. His ability to listen, seek advice, and apologize for mistakes serves as a guiding principle for me.In leading Saudi German Hospitals, I prioritize humility and inclusivity. I believe in listening to my team, valuing their input, and fostering an environment where everyone feels heard and respected. Embracing our cultural heritage and values, rather than blindly following foreign models, is essential in shaping our leadership approach.

Looking ahead, I envision Saudi German Hospitals continuing to excel under my direction. I aspire for a future where our hospitals are beacons of compassionate care, innovation, and excellence, guided by the timeless principles of humility, respect, and equality exemplified by Prophet Muhammad.

Evolve: As the pioneers of the IT concept in the health sector how do you leverage technology to improve healthcare delivery and operational efficiency and what strategies do you employ to stay abreast with the most recent advancements in technology and the industry to keep your Saudi German Hospitals Group remains competitive and cutting-edge?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: In leveraging technology to enhance healthcare delivery and operational efficiency at Saudi German Hospitals Group, our approach is straightforward: when faced with a problem, seek a technological solution. Time is very crucial in our line of work; we deal with people's lives, and minimizing waiting time is critical.

To achieve this, we've established an offshore office in Cairo, equipped with staff monitoring patients in real-time across our hospitals in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE. This system enables us to proactively address issues and shorten waiting times. For instance, if a patient in Clinic 5 waits too long, our staff can intervene before any complaints arise.

Additionally, we've implemented systems to ensure the timely discharge of patients, with alerts sent if protocols aren't followed. This systematic approach, directed towards industrializing healthcare, optimizes our operations and enhances patient experience.

Moreover, we've integrated direct communication lines with higher officials, including myself, ensuring rapid response to any issues. This isn't just about addressing complaints; it's about fulfilling a higher objective. Inspired by the Hadith, where helping others is linked to offering Tahjud  prayer for 30 days in Medina, I'm committed to ensuring everyone in our organization shares this commitment to excellence.

Evolve: Based on our assessment of your professional background, you have developed strong managerial abilities. Would you kindly give your thoughts on the "Power of Network"?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: I started focusing on the power of network during a YPO educational program that was focused on hyper-competition. Despite my background as an electrical engineer and lacking managerial experience, I was intrigued by the networking concept. The speaker's talk on market share and economies of scale left me initially very lost and confused, but it planted a seed.

I returned home with a goal that was to expand from one hospital to five by 2005. Through sheer passion, persistence, and innovation, we achieved it. This experience taught me that what we desire, we can achieve. It's not just about education; it's about putting theories into practice. Expanding our hospital network across cities, I realized the true power of networking. Each hospital built upon the knowledge and experience of the others, streamlining operations and facilitating growth. For example, our hospitals in Lahore and Islamabad draw from the success of those in Casablanca and Mecca.

Looking ahead, Malaysia is our next destination, followed by China, with its rich culture and immense potential for change. Networking isn't just about connections; it's about building a foundation of knowledge and experience that propels us forward.

Evolve: Saudi German Health has been aiding like nobody else did with their motto, ‘Caring like Family’. You have made a significant contribution and create possibilities for young entrepreneurs to deal with something about health. As a Group President, how do you think these efforts are putting their best to assist thus far in crisis management?

Mr. Sobhi Batterjee: I didn’t come up with the Motto "caring like family" solely but it was my son who came up with it and it was a need of an hour to spearhead this initiative as he took the reins of the business. Recognizing the need to infuse his philosophy into our approach, my son Makar sought the expertise of international consultants to elevate our brand. Through extensive workshops and surveys involving stakeholders like patients, bankers, suppliers, and staff, the consensus emerged: "Caring like family." This mantra reflects our unwavering commitment to providing compassionate care, with a human touch that sets us apart.

In times of crisis, these efforts come to the forefront. By embodying the spirit of family in our approach to healthcare, we not only provide exceptional care but also foster a sense of trust and security among our patients and stakeholders. It's this dedication to putting people first that guides us through challenging times and enables us to navigate crisis management with compassion and resilience.
